(Pittsburgh, Pa.): Edinboro scored 133 points and won the 33rd Annual EWL (Eastern Wrestling League) Championships on Saturday, March 8th, at Fitzgerald Field House. Host Pitt finished second with 111 points, West Virginia was third with 103.5, Bloomsburg fourth with 86, Lock Haven fifth with 70.5, Clarion sixth with 55 and Cleveland State seventh with 53 points. The tournament "OW", as voted by the coaches, was Edinboro's Gregor Gillespie who won the individual title at 157 pounds with an 8-3 win over Bloomsburg's Matt Moley. Clarion had a very solid tournament and totaled 8 placewinners at this year's EWL's. The Golden Eagles were led by third place finishers Jay Ivanco (Fr. Monroeville - Gateway) at 125-pounds and Hadley Harrison (So. McKean - General McLane) at 149-pounds. Taking fourth place was 197-pounder Jamie Luckett (Jr. St. Charles, Mo.), while 157-pounder Travis Uncapher (Fr. Grapeville - Hempfield) finished fifth, and Rob LaBrake (133- So. N. Bennington, Vt.), Mario Morelli (174- So. DuBois), Scott Joseph (184- So. Export - Kiski) and Roman Husam (hwt. - Fr. Lewisburg) all finished sixth. Ivanco defeated Pitt's Ryan Bosso 4-0 to earn his third place finish. He was 3-1 on the day and raised his season record to 27-13. After losing to WVU's Kyle Turnbull 5-2 in his opening match, Ivanco majored Ryan Riggs (CS) 10-1, then upset Lock Haven's John Trumbetti 6-4 in overtime to get to Bosso. Harrison defeated Lock Haven's Matt Fittery 6-5 for third place. Harrison led 5-3 in the third when Fittery's takedown tied the match with about 40-seconds left. Harrison escaped about 12 seconds later and posted the 6-5 win. The win didn't come without controversy however. At the end of the first period, with Harrison leading 2-0, he used a power half to turn Fittery and the mat was pounded signaling a pin at 2:49. But the mat judge (2nd official) overruled the pin, declared an illegal arm bar on Harrison, put the score at 2-1 Harrison and put the wrestlers back on the mat. The ruling caused about a 10-minute delay in the match, and Clarion head coach would have filed a protest had Harrison lost the re-start of the match. Harrison was 2-1 on the day and raised his record to 23-10. He lost his opening bout 3-2 to Edinboro's Daryl Cocozzo, but came back and won a 12-5 decision over Ryan Hurley (CS) before posting his win against Fittery. Luckett was 2-2 on the day to finish fourth at 197. He opened with a 5-2 win over Eric Shaw (BL), lost 10-1 to Jared Villers (WV), defeated Dave Crowell (Pitt) 3-2 and lost 3-1 in sudden death to Edinboro's Pat Bradshaw. Lucket finished the year at 11-8. Uncapher won his fifth place match 7-6 over Rob Michaels of Cleveland State and was 1-2 on the day. He opened with a 9-4 loss to Pitt's Matt Kocher, then lost by fall to Zac Fryling of WVU, before winning his 5th place bout. Uncapher is now 22-11. LaBrake lost his fifth place match to Jason Guffey (BL) 4-2 in overtime, while Morelli lost his 5th place match by a 9-7 margin to Cleveland State's J.T. Miller, and Husam lost a potential upset bid against Dustin Rogers (WV) 10-7 for fifth. LaBrake won 13-1 over Jared Garvin (WV), then lost 13-6 to Billy Ashnault (LH) and 15-9 to Josh Palivoda (CS). He finished the year 11-17. Morelli opened with a 15-7 loss to Chance Litton (WV), defeated Brian Shaw (BL) 5-4, lost 2-0 to Tom Kocher (LH) and to Miller. Mario finished the season 15-19. Husam finished 6th with an 0-3 record. He lost the opener to Mike Spaid (BL) 9-1, lost to Rashard Goff (7-1) and then to WVU's Rogers. He actually led Rogers 5-0 in the first and nearly pinned the nationally ranked wrestler, but Rogers escaped an came back to win 10-7. Husam finished 8-22 this year. Joseph finished sixth, and could have fared better, but an ankle and knee injury forced him to medical forfeit his match for fifth place at 184 to Dave Sullivan (Pitt), who he defeated 5-4 in the opening round. Joseph lost 19-5 to Kurt Brenner, was injured and lost to Jesse Hasseman (8-5) and then forfeited his final match. Officially 1-2, he finished the year 12-21. Also wrestling for the Golden Eagles were Sal Lascari at 141 and Dominic Ross at 165. Both were 0-2 and out of the tournament. Lascari finished the season 16-12, and Ross finished 5-6.
