Ricky Henderson is a first-team All-PSAC-West selection

March 11, 2008

LOCK HAVEN - Clarion University senior Ricky Henderson was named first-team All-PSAC-West in a voting by the league's coaches Tuesday, while freshman Mike Sherry earned second-team honors.

Henderson (Detroit, Mich./Wayne Co. CC/Renaissance HS), who was a second-team All-PSAC-West selection in 2006, was Clarion's leading rebounder (8.8 rpg) and second-leading scorer (11.9 ppg) this season while ranking second in the PSAC in rebounding and 25th in scoring. He was also third in the PSAC and 29th in the nation in blocked shots averaging 2.05 per contest. Henderson, who missed all but five games last year with an injury, finished his Clarion career with 618 points in just 46 games while adding 423 rebounds and 98 blocked shots. He recorded six double-doubles this season and had 19 rebounds vs. Briarcliffe, tied for second most boards in a game at Clarion since 1980 while adding 18 boards vs. Edinboro, tied for the seventh most rebounds at Clarion since 1980.

Sherry (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley), Clarion's sharp-shooting freshman, is the first Golden Eagle freshman to be named All-PSAC-West since the school's all-time leading scorer Kwame Morton earned second-team honors in 1991. He joins IUP freshman Daryl Webb on this year's second-team making the two of them just the fifth and sixth freshmen to earn All-PSAC-West honors in the last 15 years.

Clarion's leading scorer this season (12.3 ppg), Sherry ranked 23rd in the PSAC in scoring and second in the PSAC among freshman. He hit a team-high 72 3-pointers, the second most in the PSAC and the most in the PSAC-West, while shooting 42.6 percent (72 of 169) from beyond the 3-point arc, the fourth-best mark in the PSAC and the 22nd best mark in the nation. Mike's 332 points were the most by a freshman at Clarion since 1995 when Shawn Bellis scored 358. Sherry scored 25 or more points three times this season including a high of 30 in a home win over Shippensburg. In that game, he hit 11 of 13 shots including 8 of 10 3-pointers, tying the school-record for 3-point percentage in a game when taking at least 10 that was originally set by Morton in 1991 vs. Slippery Rock. Sherry was named PSAC-West "Rookie of the Week" five times this season while also earning PSAC-West "Player of the Week" honors once.

NOTES - This is the 20th straight season Clarion has had at least one All-PSAC-West selection, while Henderson's first-team selection means that Clarion has had a first-team member in 17 of the past 19 years including 11 of the last 12 ... The Golden Eagles, under 20th year head coach Ron Righter, finished 16-12 overall and 7-5 in the PSAC-West while qualifying for the PSAC playoffs for the second straight season and for the 11th time in 12 years ... Righter is 328-212 in his 20 years at Clarion, the winningest coach in school history. He is also 352-236 in 22 years as a head coach.
